Microevolution

Tools: Adobe Illustrator | Adobe Photoshop | Articulate Storyline

Details:  This interactive learning module, designed for a college-level biology course, employs the engaging aesthetic of a classic 1980s video game to explore the foundational concepts of microevolution.

This module was developed through a collaborative process involving an instructional designer and a subject-matter expert in biology. This partnership ensured the accurate and engaging presentation of complex scientific concepts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Microevolutionary Processes: Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms driving microevolution, including genetic drift, gene flow, mutation, and natural selection.

  • Population Dynamics: Students will explore how these microevolutionary forces interact to influence allele frequencies within populations over time, leading to gradual evolutionary change.

  • Adaptive Change: The module illustrates how microevolutionary processes can result in adaptations that enhance an organism's survival and reproductive success in its environment.

Gamification and Engagement:

By leveraging the nostalgic appeal and interactive nature of 80s video games, the module aims to enhance student engagement, motivation, and knowledge retention within a challenging scientific domain.

This gamified approach fosters active learning and provides students with an immersive experience to visualize and understand the dynamic processes of microevolution.

Transshipping

Tools: Adobe Illustrator | Articulate Storyline 360

Details: This avatar-led learning experience, developed in collaboration with subject-matter experts in security, provides comprehensive training on the critical topic of transshipment.

Development and Expertise:

The module was created through a collaborative process, integrating the instructional design expertise with the specialized knowledge of security professionals. This partnership ensured the accurate and effective delivery of vital security information.

Learning Objectives:

  • Conceptual Understanding: Learners will gain a clear understanding of transshipment, its implications for global trade and security, and the associated risks.

  • Threat Recognition: The module equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify potential indicators of transshipment activities, enhancing their vigilance and awareness.

  • Reporting Procedures: Learners will be guided through established reporting procedures, enabling them to effectively communicate concerns and contribute to maintaining secure supply chains.

Avatar-Based Learning Approach:

By employing an avatar-led approach, the module offers an engaging and immersive learning experience. This interactive format promotes knowledge retention and encourages active participation in the learning process.

Driver Obstacles

Tools: Adobe Illustrator | Articulate Storyline 360 | Vyond

Details: This introductory training module, designed for new truck drivers, utilizes a variety of interactive elements and multimedia to effectively communicate essential knowledge about on-road challenges.

Learning Objectives:

  • Hazard Recognition: Drivers will learn to identify and anticipate potential hazards commonly encountered on the road, including adverse weather conditions, challenging terrain, and other drivers' behaviors.

  • Safety Procedures: The module reinforces safe driving practices and protocols to mitigate risks and ensure the well-being of the driver and others on the road.

  • Situational Awareness: Drivers will develop an understanding of the importance of maintaining situational awareness and adapting their driving strategies to changing road conditions.

Character-Driven Narrative:

The module leverages the established character "Rusty" to create a relatable and engaging learning experience. This character-driven approach fosters a connection with the learners and enhances knowledge retention.

Instructional Strategies:

A variety of instructional methods are employed throughout the module, including:

  • Interactive Scenarios: Engaging learners in realistic scenarios to practice decision-making and apply safe driving techniques.

  • Animations and Visualizations: Clarifying complex concepts and procedures through dynamic visuals.

  • Knowledge Checks and Assessments: Reinforcing learning and evaluating comprehension of key safety principles

Candyland

Tools: Adobe Illustrator |Adobe After Effects | Articulate Storyline 360

Details: This interactive learning module, inspired by the classic Candyland board game, was designed for an introductory psychology college course.

Learning Objectives:

  • Genetics and Heredity: Students will gain a foundational understanding of how genetic traits and characteristics are passed down through generations, and how these inherited factors contribute to individual development.

  • Environmental Influences: Students will explore the interplay between genetics and environmental factors in shaping personality, behavior, and social outcomes.

  • Social Awareness: The module introduces students to key social issues related to genetics, heredity, and diversity, fostering critical thinking and discussion.

Gamification and Engagement:

By leveraging the familiar and engaging format of a board game, the module aims to enhance student participation, knowledge retention, and motivation to learn complex psychological concepts.

Placement within the Curriculum:

As an introductory module, it provides a stimulating foundation for subsequent coursework by sparking curiosity about the interplay of genetics, environment, and social factors in shaping human behavior.
